On-demand information for Idaho winter fun. The Bogus mobile project was developed to target iPhone and other webkit based mobile browsers to provide useful information for the skier on the go. An additional version was developed to target less capable mobile browsers, bringing the best possible experience to a wide range of devices. The content on the mobile site reflects the most frequently visited content on the main Bogus site plus other helpful information. To enhance the experience, AJAX content loading was used to minimize requests and keep the mobile site responsive. Handy info for those great Idaho powder days.

Be Outside in Idaho

Addressing the troubling rise of what’s being referred to as “nature deficit disorder” is the driving force behind a new initiative that deems 2009 “Be Outside – Idaho Children in Nature” year. More than 100 state and federal agencies are partnering with educators, health care professionals and private entities to help raise awareness about the importance of children establishing a meaningful and lasting bond with the great outdoors.

In support of this initiative, Drake Cooper worked with Idaho’s Department of Parks and Recreation to design a website encouraging nature-deficient youth to go outside and play. The website, designed by Justin Yonk of Drake Cooper, includes 101 ideas for ways to play outside, the latest news and events happening outside in Idaho, information on how to get involved with the initiative, Idaho maps featuring destinations and attractions and plenty of other goodies.

Check out the site here: http://www.visitidaho.org/children-in-nature/.

Then get offline and get outside!

Spreading the word on Ketchum/Sun Valley Nordic

We’ve been working on an online awareness campaign to spread the word about the awesome Nordic skiing experience in the Ketchum/Sun Valley area. The online approach really worked nicely because it fit the ongoing trend of reaching people through the web, and we experimented a little with social media channels.

All of the major Nordic skiing publications are online now – some of them exclusively online like fasterskier.com (one of the most popular cross-country ski sites for racers) – while SkiTrax and Cross Country Skier still publish print versions. Like everything else, the focus is shifting to free information on the web.

It’s much easier to reach scores of cross-country ski clubs in the West because nearly all of them are online, and have their own web sites and volunteer webmasters. So that’s a good thing.

For all of us Idahoans who cross-country ski or snowshoe, it’s important to remember what an awesome trail system it is, and how it really should be considered one of the Top 10 Nordic skiing destinations in North America. That’s because they have more than 260Ks of groomed Nordic skiing trails valley-wide, the trails are immaculately groomed daily, and Galena Lodge and Sun Valley Resort provide a great indoor retreat with hot drinks and scrumptious food when the skiing day is over.

In a nice showing of inter-valley cooperation, the Ketchum/Sun Valley Chamber of Commerce has a nice web page that provides links to all of the key Nordic venues in the Wood River Valley, including the Galena Lodge, North Valley Trails and Sun Valley Resort. This is your go-to source for more information on the Ketchum/Sun Valley Nordic scene.

We also created a spot on our client news page that will be expanded with more photos and video.

Since we’re bullish on social networking, we also shared information with 437 fans on the largest Nordic group on Facebook, and we created a Sun Valley Nordic Twitter page that’s been getting some hits. Galena Lodge has a blog that will be populated with regular updates this winter on snowfall and trail conditions.

Ideally, it’d be nice to be one of the 800 cross-country skiers who partake in the Wells Fargo Boulder Mountain Tour on Feb. 7. The race involves skiing 32Ks going gradually downhill (1,000 vertical feet of descent) between Galena Lodge and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters, north of Ketchum.

It all makes me want to wax up the boards and pray to the snow god Ullr for lots of snow this winter.

Sun Valley Resort's New Pavilion

I have the pleasure of escorting some local media the opening night of the
of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony Series at the new Sun Valley Pavilion this Sunday, and I am really looking forward to it. The pavilion is a real marvel as far as design and engineering, and I know the Sun Valley community is very excited about the new venue. The striking structure is completely unique and different from any structures in the region. It will serve as the permanent home for the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, the largest privately funded, free admission symphony in America, and host many other events year round.

A little bit about the pavilion: The outdoor entertainment venue is made of wood, tensile fabric, copper shingles and travertine rock imported from Italy. The structure was developed and engineered by FTL Design and Engineering Studio of New York City. More than 1,500 concertgoers will fit beneath the white, tensile fabric that stretches a half acre from the main design feature, a soaring 75-foot arch. The roof is horn-shaped and covered with reflective copper shingles. The distinctive shape of the roof and the arch allow the structure to blend seamlessly with the breathtaking beauty of Sun Valley and classic view of Bald Mountain. The white fabric tends to appear that it is "glowing" in the soft evening light. It's going to be gorgeous.

For those who like to golf...

Sun Valley is getting set to open the first nine holes of its incredible new White Clouds Golf Course Aug. 11. Video can be seen at http://www.sunvalley.com/SunValley/info/act.golf.new.aspx. Good news for state tourism

Yesterday, Caldwell business and civic leaders laid out their vision to position Canyon County as one of the Northwest’s most significant wine-producing tourism regions. According to Mike Butts at the Idaho Press Tribune, "Officials made several announcements about developments in the county’s vineyard and winery region during a press conference at the Caldwell downtown gazebo in front of the newly-restored Indian Creek. "

It’s great to see the Idaho Wine Commission and Caldwell/Canyon County getting more aggressive in their approach to position Southwest Idaho’s Snake River Valley as a unique wine-growing region and leading tourist destination. This is great news for state tourism and sets the wheels in motion for the Snake River Valley wine country to become one of Idaho's next great attractions.

DC Selected to Build, Refresh Sun Valley Brand

Drake Cooper has been selected as the Agency of Record for the Sun Valley Ketchum Chamber and Visitors Bureau. Our charge is to to help reestablish Sun Valley/Ketchum as a premiere, international vacation destination, which we are excited to get to work on right away.

We're honored to have been chosen as the agency for one of the most exquisite resort and vacation areas in the world. We competed against agencies from throughout the Northwest and were awarded the work by demonstrating what chamber Executive Director Carol Waller referred to as a "uniquely thoughtful campaign planning process backed by an impressive client portfolio."

One of the reasons for a rebrand, according to Waller, is to reach a new, younger demographic while continuing to connect with existing customers.

Our contract with Sun Valley Ketchum Chamber and Visitors Bureau goes into effect immediately with both parties working to come up with a targeted and integrated marketing plan to be launched later this year.

We look forward to this great, new venture.

Visitidaho.org an Official Webby Honoree

Drake Cooper has been working with the Idaho Travel Council since 1981. We love them. Together we put forth advertising, pr, web and other marketing materials to help encourage travelers to explore the great state of Idaho.

As we all know, there's lots of great places in the world to visit and tons of great online tourism environments. So it was an honor to hear that the primary DC/ITC site, VisitIdaho.org, was an Official Honoree at the 12th Annual Webby Awards. Some of the other top nominees were SouthAustralia.com, VisitBritain.com, Us.Holland.com, Montereyinfo.org and Furuvik.se.

Each of these sites are very cool to check out, combining engaging environments that highlight the core reasons people should visit. We particularly enjoy what Furuvik.se did--a complete user experience of the area, which, surprisingly, you don't even need to understand the language to comprehend the experience they offer. Excellent.

The Official Honoree distinction is awarded to work that scores in the top 15% of all work entered into the Webby Awards. There are nearly 10,000 entries received from all 50 states and over 60 countries.
