Spreading the word on Ketchum/Sun Valley Nordic

We’ve been working on an online awareness campaign to spread the word about the awesome Nordic skiing experience in the Ketchum/Sun Valley area. The online approach really worked nicely because it fit the ongoing trend of reaching people through the web, and we experimented a little with social media channels.
All of the major Nordic skiing publications are online now – some of them exclusively online like fasterskier.com (one of the most popular cross-country ski sites for racers) – while SkiTrax and Cross Country Skier still publish print versions. Like everything else, the focus is shifting to free information on the web.
It’s much easier to reach scores of cross-country ski clubs in the West because nearly all of them are online, and have their own web sites and volunteer webmasters. So that’s a good thing.
For all of us Idahoans who cross-country ski or snowshoe, it’s important to remember what an awesome trail system it is, and how it really should be considered one of the Top 10 Nordic skiing destinations in North America. That’s because they have more than 260Ks of groomed Nordic skiing trails valley-wide, the trails are immaculately groomed daily, and Galena Lodge and Sun Valley Resort provide a great indoor retreat with hot drinks and scrumptious food when the skiing day is over.
In a nice showing of inter-valley cooperation, the Ketchum/Sun Valley Chamber of Commerce has a nice web page that provides links to all of the key Nordic venues in the Wood River Valley, including the Galena Lodge, North Valley Trails and Sun Valley Resort. This is your go-to source for more information on the Ketchum/Sun Valley Nordic scene.
We also created a spot on our client news page that will be expanded with more photos and video.
Since we’re bullish on social networking, we also shared information with 437 fans on the largest Nordic group on Facebook, and we created a Sun Valley Nordic Twitter page that’s been getting some hits. Galena Lodge has a blog that will be populated with regular updates this winter on snowfall and trail conditions.
Ideally, it’d be nice to be one of the 800 cross-country skiers who partake in the Wells Fargo Boulder Mountain Tour on Feb. 7. The race involves skiing 32Ks going gradually downhill (1,000 vertical feet of descent) between Galena Lodge and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters, north of Ketchum.
It all makes me want to wax up the boards and pray to the snow god Ullr for lots of snow this winter.

Mobile Marketing 2008
Image via WikipediaI have been recently checking out www.mobilemarketer.com . It is an informative web site on (I bet you guessed it) Mobile Marketing. There are some good case studies and it seems like a pretty good way to quickly educate yourself on what is going on in this space. They have also published the “Mobile Marketer’s Mobile Outlook 2008”. That title says mobile twice within it’s total of four words, but beyond that, I have only scanned this report so far although it does look to be worthwhile information as we move ourselves along learning more about this new marketing medium. I also notice that Omnicom just announced a new Mobile division this week.
Here is the link to the report.

The Giant Pool of Money
Image by Getty Images via DaylifeLike everyone, I have tried to read about and understand this big ol' financial mess our country is in. This podcast has been one of the best sources of learning for me. It's almost an hour long, so check it out when you are knitting or out for a walk or something. From Ira Glass, This American Life. Click HERE.
Host Ira Glass talks with an NPR business and economics correspondent about two gatherings he attended—one at the Ritz Carlton and one at a community college in Brooklyn. The first was an awards dinner for finance professionals who created the mortgage-based financial instruments that nearly brought down the global economic system. The other was a non-profit conference for people facing foreclosure.

"Nation's Best Website." No, Really.

The Drake Cooper interactive team continues to receive national accolades for their outstanding work. Most recently, the Idaho Scenic Byways website was recognized at the annual National Transportation Public Affairs Workshop (NTPAW) as the "Nation’s Best Website."
The award was given by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and it recognizes Idaho Scenic Byways for its well-designed, interactive website which provides a comprehensive way for travelers to view Idaho’s scenic byways in great visual detail.
With Google Maps integration, site visitors can click and choose any desired byway to find information on areas of interest, lodging, events and attractions unique to each byway. Scenic photography is used to help tell the story, with each byway having it’s own photo album. Travelers can use the site to order a free scenic byway guide, link to a national byways web site, or even send a cool e-postcard from the Idaho byway of their choice.
The Idaho Scenic Byways web site is the result of collaboration between the Idaho Transportation Department, Idaho Division of Tourism Development, and Drake Cooper, all of which make up the collaborate in Idaho Scenic Byways’ marketing efforts. The site was designed and developed to promote awareness of the beauty and diversity of Idaho’s scenic byways.
The NTPAW was held in Nashville last month. The award is based on quality, intelligence and creativity, and is peer-judged. Nice work DC interactive!
